There are other fruits from further afield with winemaking potential, given a bit of experimentation and winemaking expertise, one example being the pomegranate; several pomegranate wines from Armenia and the Levant have, without much fanfare, recently been introduced to the US market, perhaps to capitalize on the pomegranate juice fad.
The most readily available such wine in my area is Proshyan, from Armenia, a 100% pomegranate wine (no sugar added) vinified in an off-dry style and available in 750 ml bottles for about $9.
It's a deep red color, but drinks like a white wine due to the absence of tannins. About as off-dry as one of the better off-dry Rieslings or White Zins, and certainly not dessert-wine sweet, it has, like the pomegranate juice from which it is made, enough tartness to compensate. Fermentation is certainly an improvement here; it's not the palate-coater that fresh pomegranate juice can be, but is nonetheless loaded with jammy fruit flavor, rounded out by a nice peppery zip.
Serve this cold, at the same temperature as an off-dry rosé, and pair it with (no exaggeration) nearly anything except seafood or delicate sauces. The residual sugar keeps it from tasting hot when paired with spicy dishes, and it's robust enough for steak or barbecue but doesn't overwhelm poultry. Indian-style curries are an exceptionally good pairing, and I suspect this would also be a good alternative to Chardonnay at the Thanksgiving table.
One final note: Proshyan is still using cork closures--a silly practice for wines such as this that lack aging potential--and like many a Second World prodcer, seems to have quality control problems. Plastic corks or "Stelvin" screw caps would be a welcome improvement, but I don't anticipate seeing Proshyan make the switch unless their pomegranate wine really takes off.
Armenia is famous for its unique natural conditions. Crystal spring water, mountains, high sun isolation, ecological clean fruits and assiduous work let the specialists to create the suggested pomegranate wine.
