Romania: If the Princely vineyards from Moldavia are famous due to the old Romanian sorts, Wallachia controls the heavy artillery, the nickname of some high class red wines. From Pietroasele with an excellent Tamaioasa Romaneasca to Segarcea or Vanju Mare, Dealul Viilor, near the Danube, and to Drobeta-Turnu Severin, the wine kingdom spreads over 100,000 hectares. Red wines are also produced in the western part of Wallachia, in Oltenia, as this province is called. The wines from La Vanju Mare, Corcova or Samburesti have the power of a bear. We should not forget the white wines from Pietroasele, Stefanesti Arges, Dragasani or Segarcea, vineyards with an excellent reputation regarding the sorts of Riesling, Sauvignon and Feteasca Regala.
Dealu Mare Dealu Mare, stretched on more than 60 km, 3 and 12 km in width, is the most compact vineyard in Romania. Some of the best red wines in Romania are produced in Urlati, Valea Calugareasca and Tohani . The star is called -Feteasca neagra.
Tohani The wines of Tohani vienyards – owned by Prince Nicolae – wear the signs of noble origin: the crown, the title and the name. „Princiar” – the first wine to ennoble the one who drinks it - is thick, heavy, rich in tannin and is produced from Busuioaca de Tohani, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Feteasca Neagra sort. Dolletti wine – mysterious as a woman in-love – is made from Feteasca Neagra, Merlot, Negru de Tohani, Italian Riesling, Sauvignon blanc, Muscat Ottonel. Above all, the special characteristics of these wines are duet to the technology of vinification, based on dry grapes. Urlaţi Feteasca Neagra from Dealu Mare - Urlati is the perfect choice. Its taste recalls the blackberries. When it is 5 – 6 years old, the taste is compared by specialists with a wild horse. A county rich in vines and traditions, Prahova has interesting tourism programs call The wine roads. Among the vineries, Seciu Cellar, near Ploiesti, and Urlateanu Cellar from Urlati have to be mentioned.

Savignon Blanc One of the white wine varieties, Sauvignon Blanc was introduced in Romania around the late nineteenth century from France. Its color varies from ivory to yellowish to green-yellow. When young and fresh it has an almost spicily penetrating aroma, variously described as gooseberry or blackcurrant leaf. With a bit of age it becomes more musk like, soft, grassy, and fruity. With current cold, slow fermentation methods maintaining a temperature of 10-15 Celsius, the Sauvignon Blanc preserves a lot of carbon dioxide and hence retains the volatile aromatic elements. Also at colder temperatures, yeast produces a greater variety of primary fruity aromas, thus the crisp, fruity aromas of this variety of wine. It is best being served cold with chicken or seafood meals.

Pinot Noir The vineyards of Murfatlar, on the Black sea, happen to have what Pinot Noir requires. The soil is hardly soil at all. It is really more gravel and rock, made mostly of limestone. While this may not sound like a very good place for, say, tomatoes; it is exactly what makes for excellent Pinot Noir grapes. The grape vines must stretch and struggle to acquire the nutrients and water they need to grow, and in this the flavor and structure develops, long before the grapes are crushed. Murfatlar's Pinot Noir appears transparent reddish/rose in the glass with excellent luminosity. The aroma is of ripe strawberries, red berries and strangely enough, saffron. There is some aspect of terroir or "sense of place" with Murfatlar Pinot Noir. The wine has excellent fruit, with soft strawberry and red fruit flavors which become more structured and angular towards the crisp finish. There are many Pinot Noirs from France and California, at five to ten times the price, that are not as well made. Serve Murfatlar Pinot Noir with dishes such as pork roast, squash, antipasto, fowl, poached salmon or simple cold-cuts. Murfatlar Pinot Noir pairs well with cheeses such as Muenster, Caerphilly, Swiss, Appenz.ller, Spanish Manchego, or Camembert.

After having obtained the technical expertise in Champenoise winemaking in Damery and after having made wine from the 1987 harvest in the Alexander valley in California (Hafner Vineyard), Michel took over the family business of his uncle, René Barth. The harvest is carried out manually. This allows for specific years to experience a quality sorting of the grapes. The pressing of (non treaded) whole grapes from white types of vines takes place on the pneumatic press. This technique prevents the dissolution of the decay in the juice extracts and strongly limits the extraction of the bitter or herbaceous tastes. Each part of the vine is made into wine separately in order to evidence the proper characteristics of each piece of land.
