Wines from Romania
Wines from Romania
Romania:

MURFATLAR
Muscat
Murfatlar Muscat is an unadulterated and pure example of the Muscat grape.
It has an attractive golden color with good clarity and a light viscosity in the glass.
The aroma is reminiscent of golden raisins, peach nectar and lanolin.
The peach and raisin aromas carry over to the full flavor.
The finish is sweet and warm with good length and presence.
Serve Murfatlar Muscat with fruit such as grapes and citrus,
especially in puddings and custards.
Murfatlar Muscat matches equally well with many different dishes including
simple, light meats such as deli meats, fish, pork and fowl.
Try Murfatlar Muscat with Asian dishes, or perhaps try it with dishes in richer sauces
such as Goulash.

Chardonnay
Savignon Blanc
One of the white wine varieties, Sauvignon Blanc was introduced in Romania around the
late nineteenth century from France. Its color varies from ivory to yellowish to green-yellow.
When young and fresh it has an almost spicily penetrating aroma, variously described as
gooseberry or blackcurrant leaf. With a bit of age it becomes more musk like, soft, grassy,
and fruity. With current cold, slow fermentation methods maintaining a temperature of 10-15
Celsius, the Sauvignon Blanc preserves a lot of carbon dioxide and hence retains the volatile
aromatic elements. Also at colder temperatures, yeast produces a greater variety of primary
fruity aromas, thus the crisp, fruity aromas of this variety of wine. It is best being served cold
with chicken or seafood meals.

Pinot Gris
Pinot Gris is an authentic representative of the natural sweet wines, holding the record of sugar
accumulation. The wines produced in the assistance of the appearance of the noble mold
are unparalleled. It’s colors ranging from straw-yellow to amber after advanced ageing,
its characteristic taste, the overall harmony of its composition which make it velvety and unctuous,
make Pinot Gris the champion of the Murfatlar sweet wines, rivaling with the most renowned world
wines. It is recommended to be served at a temperature between 40 to 50 degrees with special
dishes (foie gras, fruit pies) and all kinds of desserts, being a successful conclusion to an elegant
feast.

Pinot Noir
The vineyards of Murfatlar, on the Black sea, happen to have what Pinot Noir requires.
The soil is hardly soil at all. It is really more gravel and rock, made mostly of limestone.
While this may not sound like a very good place for, say, tomatoes; it is exactly what makes
for excellent Pinot Noir grapes. The grape vines must stretch and struggle to acquire the nutrients
and water they need to grow, and in this the flavor and structure develops, long before the grapes
are crushed.
Murfatlar's Pinot Noir appears transparent reddish/rose in the glass with excellent luminosity.
The aroma is of ripe strawberries, red berries and strangely enough, saffron. There is some aspect
of terroir or "sense of place" with Murfatlar Pinot Noir. The wine has excellent fruit, with
soft strawberry and red fruit flavors which become more structured and angular towards
the crisp finish. There are many Pinot Noirs from France and California, at five to ten times the price,
that are not as well made.
Serve Murfatlar Pinot Noir with dishes such as pork roast, squash, antipasto, f owl,
poached salmon or simple cold-cuts. Murfatlar Pinot Noir pairs well with cheeses such as
Muenster, Caerphilly, Swiss, Appenz.ller, Spanish Manchego, or Camembert.

Cabernet Sauvignon
Enjoy Murfatlar Cabernet Sauvignon with hearty meals or dishes with rich sauces.
Most stews, steak, hamburger, meatloaf or duck would be a particularly good marriage of flavors.
Murfatlar Cabernet Sauvignon would also go well with simple, classic cheeses such as Cheddar,
Jarlsberg, Havarti, Gouda or Brie. Serve Murfatlar Cabernet Sauvignon at room temperature.

Merlot
A bright red wine, brisk, lively, with a characteristic floral bouquet, a partner alongside
Cabernet Sauvignon of the great Bordeaux wines, harmoniously built, with a good ageing evolution,
particularly when oak caskets are used. Specific organoleptic composition, with a mild tannin
content, this wine has a fruity taste of blackcurrant. It’s recommended serving temperature
is between 60 to 65 degrees. It may be accompanied by rich dishes, venison, specialties of grilled
meat, lamb, smoked foods, as well as high quality cheeses towards the end of the meal.

CARPATHIAN HILLS
Cabernet Sauvignon

From wine region Dealu Mare, Tohani in SubCarpathian Hills
This red  wine is full body wine. Good deep purple color, spicy aromas and a hint of cherries,  fruity with good soft tannins.
Cabernet Sauvignon can sometimes be difficult to grow in Romania, however, the 2001 vintage was an exceptional year for Cabernet. The grapes managed to obtain full ripeness producing a fruity and soft tannic wine, which is unusual for Cabernet Sauvignon, it usually tends to have hard tannins and takes time to mature. Serve at room temperature. Best served with games, red meat, aged cheeses

Is not known the exact form of the wine culture at the time of the conquest 1100 years ago
at Tokaj-Foothills. The Hungarians tribes were established at the foothills of Caucasus,
where they got to know winemaking.
Its most convincing proof is that several basic terms
associated with grape and wine culture - are of Old-Turkish origin.
The established Hungarians probably realized the excellent potential of the Foothills
and tried to apply their knowledge there.
Tokaj comes from the village of Tokaj in the Carpathian
Mountains in NE Hungry, where the Furmint grape grows on 5.000 acres of volcanic soil.
Tokaj is still the only great wine made east of the Rhine. It is pressed from overripe grapes
touched by "noble mold" that forms on the skins of ripening grapes in certain areas and helps
to concentrate the sugar and flavor. At the most the grapes may contain 30% sugar which
turns into 15% alcohol. The dried grapes are collected in the baskets that holds 30 pounds
each and those baskets supply an identifying mark for the wine.

Tokaji Aszú 5
It is the sweet, topaz-colored wine. The original meaning of the word aszú was "dried",
but the term aszú came to be associated with the type of wine made with "nobly" rotten
grapes. Aszú berries are individually picked, then collected in huge vats and trampled
into the consistency of paste known as aszú dough. The wine is racked off into wooden
casks or vats where fermentation is completed and the aszú wine is to mature.
The casks are stored in a cool environment, and are not tightly closed,
so a slow fermentation process continues in the cask, usually for several years.

annually, and a further 9000 tons are purchased.
Red and white grapes have approximately equal proportions.

Merlot
Cabernet Sauvignon
Merlot has a long tradition in the Vipava Valley and is the dominant of the winery's red grapes,
followed by Cabernet Sauvignon.

BIAZEVI WINERY
Rebula
Rebula is the most widely cultivated grape of the Primorje region where it has a long tradition.
It is thought to be autochthonous to the general area of Primorje and neighbouring Italy and has been
cultivated in this geographic region at least since 13th century. Rebula is greenish-yellow to golden
straw yellow and moderate in alcohol and acids. It is a dry wine, fresh, lively, and balanced;
its neutral bouquet and aroma suggest a slight reminiscence of cedar.
The wine should be consumed when still young as it gains nothing with aging.

VINAKOPER WINERY

The Vinakoper winery is the largest producer of the Koper area, cultivating 420 hectares (1038 acres)
of vineyards, the majority planted with red varieties particularly suitable for the warm Mediterranean climate:
Refoąk, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Their dominant white grapes are Malvazija, Chardonnay,
and Rumeni Muąkat, and some sites have been newly planted with Sivi Pinot.

The winery produces 3500 tons of grapes in its own vineyards and buys a further six hundred tons from
contract growers. This suffices for the production of 35,000 hectoliters (924,700 gallons) of wines per year,
10,000 hectoliters (264,200 gallons) in the high-quality range, the rest quality.

The characteristic red wines of Vinakoper are full-bodied, rich in extract, and quite heavy.

and does not gain with age
.

Merlot Reserve
Merlot - prepared both as quality and high-quality wine - is probably the most popular red wine in
Slovenia. The wine is matured in aged oak barrels and has a very balanced taste.

Cabernet Sauvignon is a richly coloured wine, very noble, and immaculately matured in oak -
a good vintage Cabernet Sauvignon from Vinakoper is probably the best of its variety in Slovenia.

its aroma of herbs and blackberries - is a natural-born winner. Ageing only adds
to its noble character. It has a rich, corpulent structure that goes well with venison
and hearty dishes. It is perfect for ageing.

Malvazija
Malvazija is the winery's dominant white, a typical wine of the Istrian peninsula: fresh, not too strong,
with a neutral bouquet and unobtrusive flavour. Vinakoper's specialty is Malvazija produced from overripe
grapes, a semi-dry to semi-sweet wine of characteristic varietal flavour.
A golden specialty from the
Koper cellar. Aged in oak barrels, it has a distinguishable deep yellow colour with golden tones.
The slightly bitter taste of almond peel passes into a pleasant vanilla aftertaste: a special wine that
combines well with many different
dishes.

ALSACE - RENE BARTH VINYARDS

The settlement of the village can be traced back to the middle ages. It successively belonged to the lords of Horbourg,
the counts of Wurtemberg, the bishop of Strasbourg and to the lords of Ribeaupierre until the revolution.

Michel Fonné, is a certified śnologist from Dijon. After having obtained the technical expertise in Champenoise
winemaking in Damery and after having made wine from the 1987 harvest in the Alexander valley in California
(Hafner Vineyard), Michel took over the family business of his uncle, René Barth.

The harvest is carried out manually. This allows for specific years to experience a quality sorting of the grapes.
The pressing of (non treaded) whole grapes from white types of vines takes place on the pneumatic press.
This technique prevents the dissolution of the decay in the juice extracts and strongly limits the extraction
of the bitter or herbaceous tastes. Each part of the vine is made into wine separately in order to evidence
the proper characteristics of each piece of land.
